Utility models protect technical innovations with a practical and industrial character. They are similar to patents but are easier to obtain and less costly.

Registration procedure
1. Checking the conditions
- Novelty: The innovation must be new and not known from the prior art.
- Industrial applicability: The innovation must be applicable in industry.
- Technical character: It must be a product (device, equipment) and not a process or method.
2. Preparing and filing the documentation
- Description of the innovation: A detailed description of the innovation is required, including technical drawings if applicable.
- Filing the application with OSIM and payment of fees.
3. Evaluation of the application
- Documentation report: OSIM will prepare a documentation report to verify the novelty of the innovation.
- Registration: The utility model is registered at the applicant's responsibility, without a detailed technical examination.
4. Production and commercialization
- Duration of protection: The protection is valid for 6 years, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 10 years.
- Commercial exploitation: After registration, production and commercialization of the protected product can begin.
Advantages (compared to patents):
- Speed: The registration procedure is faster than that for patents.
- Reduced Costs: Fees and maintenance costs are lower.
